Troubleshooting a 51 Error Code
Indoor Fan Motor Error
Codes will be displayed on indoor unit head on the indicator lights or by the remote on the wall and the code will be displayed.
There are three lights:
- Operation
- Timer
- Economy - Typically is flashing rapidly when there is an error occurring
To determine code:
- Count each light separately
- Count the operation light flashes
- count the Timer light flashes
On the wall thermostat find the error history and it will show the code.

Indoor Fan Motor Error Troubleshooting Checklist
- Pull disconnect for 5 minutes & reapply, check to see if error code reappears.
- If error code reappears turn power back off to the disconnect and check the rotation of the fan by spinning it with your hand. Check to see if there is any kind of resistance when spinning and/or if the fan stops suddenly. There should be no resistance when turning and the fan should stop slowly not suddenly or abruptly.
- If motor spins with no problems proceed to ohm the fan motor windings with a quality ohm meter.
- If the fan motor ohms bad it is a good practice to replace the Main Control board with it as defective fan motor windings can have a negative effect on the Main Control board.
