Crank Case Heater for Rotary Compressors

Crank case heaters are widely used in AC/HP applications that consist of low ambient operation and long lineset applications. There are a few "One-size-fits-all" heaters out there that work really well. But, when it comes to rotary style compressors in unitary products, because of their extra small size, the one size fits all just seems to be a bit too much yet.

I recently stumbled across a "belt-type" made by Copeland that seems to fit much better. Part number 918-0097-01. Described as 240vac 40watt Belt style. I also like to use a bit of foam tape to insulate the heater a little and ensure close contact of the heater to the compressor. As technology evolves and if something better comes along, I'll let you know.

Key Points:

  • Crankcase Heaters Usage: Commonly used in AC/HP applications for low ambient conditions and long line set installations.

  • One-Size-Fits-All Heaters: These heaters generally work well but may be excessive for rotary-style compressors due to their smaller size.

  • Recommended Heater for Rotary Compressors: The Copeland belt-type heater (Part #918-0097-01) is a better fit for these smaller compressors.

  • Heater Details: The Copeland heater is rated 240V AC and 40W.

  • Installation Tip: Adding foam tape can improve insulation and ensure better contact between the heater and compressor.

  • Future Updates: The author is committed to sharing improved solutions if they arise.
