Unconditioned Space Freeze Protection For Condensing Equipment
print icon

Condensing furnaces, water heaters, condensate lines, traps, and PVC vent systems require protection when installed in unconditioned spaces such as garages or attics. Exposure to low temperatures can lead to freezing, system lockouts, shutdowns, or equipment damage.

To prevent these issues, use insulation (1/2"-3" thick), heat tape, or freeze alarms to maintain proper function. Ensure all condensate lines are sloped correctly to prevent water buildup and ice formation. In cases where adequate protection cannot be provided, a non-condensing unit may be a more suitable option for the space.
