Fujitsu multi-zone outdoor units are designed to run with multiple indoor units connected. If only one head is installed at startup, the system will typically display an Indoor Unit Capacity Error, and the outdoor unit will not operate.

Why It Happens

The control logic in these systems expects a minimum connected capacity based on the model. If this isn't met, it triggers a fault. For example:

• 2, 3, and 4-ton multi-zone models (like the AOU24RLXFZH, AOU36RLXFZH, and AOU48RLXFZH) often support adding additional heads later, but they still require at least two indoor units connected at initial startup.

What to Know Before Planning a Staged Install

• The system won’t run with only one indoor unit if the minimum required capacity isn't met.

• Even on models that support future expansion, at least two zones must be connected and communicating to avoid startup errors.
